smith live music morellos patio schedule 2012
April 3 - rich fabec joined smith; good opening crowd; got damp; moved inside; most stayed. a roof is coming to the patio, they say.
April 11 - gonna be chilly, but beautiful; a few months from now you will beg for this weather. smith will probably play alone; plan to start earlier (five, maybe) to capture some warm temp. faithful folks hung in there, brisk tho it was. is quiet now on Patio with trucks taking rt 13 bypass - yea. can hear the music and talk at normal level.
April 18 - rich fabec and smith try out some new tunes getting ready for upcoming memorial day weekend gig with drums at walkers bluff. check out Central Standard Time.
April 25 - rich fabec joins smith, by popular demand.
May 2 - bruce "tune" boone joins smith. soul, r&b and standard fare from tenor sax.
May 9 - probably smith alone. something different.
May 16 - rich fabec holds the fort in smith's absence.
May 23 - greg "hod" hodson on alto sax joins smith after long hiatus.
May 30 - melinda tolley joins smith; some vocals, some standards. melinda on piano, smith on upright bass.
June 6 - smith alone with impressions of nyc visit.
June 13 - wade newton, that repeat offender, brings his guitar to join smith. expect some great singing out of wade. many favorites of wade and smitty. these two first played together when wade was a high school drummer (wild guess more than thirty years ago).
June 20 - smith alone under new roof over patio.
June 27 - rich fabec brings his guitar to join smith.
July 4 - no music tonite at morello's. planned closing. free jazz - happy independence day. smith planning pilgrimage to jazz camp.
July 11 - heat wave subsides. the hod (greg) returns on saxes (alto/soprano) with smith (maybe flugelhorn).
July 18 - bruce "tune" boone is back with his sax, joining smith for some r&b, soul, pop and standards.
July 25 - smith solos. expecting kristi rose from nashville for a few tunes.
Aug 1 - melinda tolley returns joining smith for vocals/piano and piano/bass. standards, latin/bossa, bebop,
Aug 8 - rich fabec on guitar expected to join smith
Aug 15 - smith on vibes in a tribute to the duke. and some piano.
Aug 22 - smith to be joined by hod on sax. standards are best.
Aug 29 - expecting a special treat w some bossa/latin and a new flute guest, sophie cape, supported by melinda tolley and smith (yours truly).
Sept 5 - rich fabec on guitar joins smith. new nord keyboard.
Sept 12 - smith.
Sept 19 - bruce (hank, spoon, tune, devil, descendant of daniel) boone returns by popular demand to join smitty. see july 18.
Sept 26 - rich fabec on guitar with smith. one of the finer guitar players in southern illinois. free.
Oct 3 - smith. solo. nice debate alternative.
Oct 10 - melinda tolley returns joining smith for vocals/piano/bass. standards, bebop, latin & swing.
Oct 17 - wade newton rescheduled with smith after recent postponement.part 1. was great til it stormed.
Oct 24 - best of wade newton with smitty. part 2. continued from last week's rain delay. should be beautiful weather. and it was the best ever patio party. dancing even - yup.
Oct 31 - gonna be cool if not cold. wish side curtains and heaters were here. latest from the boss: move into dining room til side curtains come or warm spell hits. probably smith alone. happy halloweenie.
Nov 7 - celebrate the end of election season. at last. dinner music from smith in the dining room. nope. morello's under construction. music postponed til outside curtains go up. maybe in a few weeks.
Nov 14 - morello's says the plan is to continue with heat and side curtains on the patio gazebo. hope so. for now, music on weds nites is on hold til outside patio is enclosed. expected within a few weeks.
Nov 21 - happy turkey. check back for music to resume. soon, we hope. thanks for a great summer.
Nov 28 - morellos update: outside weather curtains have been shipped. when installed they plan to resume weds nite music on heated patio. check back for dates.
Coming Soon - Look for Announcement - the fatman cometh. if/when overseas touring subsides fats kaplin will join smith for some jazz violin in the style of stephane grappelli. with some luck maybe kristi rose will croon a tune or few. not to be missed. these folks are pros. stay tuned.

penguins at taste of southern illinois - 2012
again this year (14th) the PENGUINS will bring jazz to the patrons of the TASTE OF SOUTHERN ILLINOIS. melinda tolley, voice and flute; greg hodson, alto (and soprano) sax; jim smith, keys and vibes. 5-8 pm sunday april 22, 2012 at southeastern foundation building, harrisburg, illinois. the TASTE is a public, ticketed, charitable fund raiser, hosted by the Southern IL Community Foundation. best restaurants in Southern IL provide the food - PENGUINS the music. Not to be missed.
taxi band update
Sorry. For one of the few times in its history, TAXI has had to cancel April and May 2012 gigs. Our fearless frontman, Pat (the voice) Abell, is recovering from an unplanned shoulder repair. Plans are to resume the schedule as booked starting in June 2012. TAXI thanks the folks whose events were cancelled or postponed for their understanding. Wedding dance season resumes in June 2012, we hope. Schedule will post soon. Call Pat Abell at 618/272-7593 for TAXI booking and availability.
smith live music at morello's patio - 2012
It's time for Smith live music on Morello's Patio in Harrisburg. Rich Fabec (guitar) and Smith (keys) kicked it off, beginning April 4. It rained, but the good folks mostly moved inside with food and drink to continue the festivities. (Incidentally, Mo's is planning a roof for the Patio, they say.) We missed some beautiful Wednesday nites in late March, eh? Too warm, too quick, this year; not to mention the tornado devastation of February 29.
Plans are to continue with musical variety this season. Many, if not most, of the performers from last years sessions will return, with a few new ones. If you have a strong longing for someone or something in particular, don't hesitate to ask, and to check this site for upcoming plans and schedule. If you plan to eat on the Patio, reservations are pretty much a necessity. Call Mo's at 618/252-2300. Check this blog all call Mo's for your questions about weather postponement. Music will start around 6pm, and continue at least til dark. There is some talk of expansion to weekends; let us know what you think.
Emphasis will be on live music (mostly instrumental): blues, classics, Americana, roots, standards, jazz, R&B, pop, contemporary, folk, great American songbook, more. Frequently Smith will host musical guests. To get an idea of what to expect look at post below of 4/17/11, the 2011 Schedule. The price is right - FREE; the food and drink - not free, but STELLAR. Check it out. Great scene for special events, like birthdays or retirements. Uptown in Harrisburg, Illinois.
